After all of the fun and festivities that December brings, January can feel like a very sudden drop back into real life. It cold, dark and most probably wet, with students having yet more deadlines to meet, so its no wonder that people across the country tend to feel a bit sad or off during this time. There are many things that affect and can cause these holiday blues, but fortunately we’ve found a few ways to combat them too!
What brings on the holiday blues?..
- Holidays are over, meaning it's back to work for many people. The festive decorations are all gone, and everything has returned to normal.
- Family members and friends who you only see during the holidays are gone.
- You may not have done everything you planned to over the break.
- Drinking and eating in excess may have left you feeling sluggish, or you may have put on weight.
- It's winter and the days are short, it's cold, and there's a lot of rain. Spring is coming but it won't be here for a couple of months.
- Your New Year's resolutions may be proving hard to stick to, if you have kept them at all.
How do I know if I might be suffering?
Symptoms specific to winter may include:
-Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates
-Tiredness or low energy
Is it the same thing as Seasonal Affective Disorder?
No, although it occurs around the same time and has similar effects, SAD and the blues are caused by different things. January blues are situational, caused by our feelings on some of the above matters. SAD is clinical as it is to do with the lack of light and our personal biology. The blues usually lasts for a couple of weeks maximum until you’ve got bac into the swing of things, whereas SAD can go on for months on end.
How can I beat the blues?
Although there’s no official, fool proof method to feeling better, there are a number of things you can do that will most likely help boost your mood. Try making a list of all the fun things you did over the festive period, and look through any photos you might have taken. You can also try setting yourself a solid set of new years resolutions that are positive and attainable, and create an action plan for you to achieve them. In addition to this, you can try to book fun things to do so you have things to look forwards to, and spend as much time around friends and family as you can.
