17 February 2020 Health & Wellbeing

Although some say they’re the best years of your life, your time at university is arguably some of the most stressful and testing you will go through. With the pressures to succeed in your degree, moving to a new city, making friends, as well as making money all piling up, its no surprise that the number of students who are struggling to keep up with everything at once is increasing rapidly. Here’s a few tips to help you identify when you’re struggling, how to manage it and when you need to ask for help;

How do I know if I’m struggling?

  • Are you constantly tired and drained, but cant sleep at night?
  • Do you get frequent headaches and are often ill?
  • Do you find yourself getting easily irritated and having bad mood swings?
  • Are you worrying about meeting deadlines etc to the point of feeling sick?

If you answered yes to the majority of the questions above, you may need to take a step back and figure out a few ways of how to manage the stresses and pressures of Uni before it spirals into something bigger.

How can I manage and deal with the stress?

  • Take frequent breaks when doing work and try to start it well in advance of the due date. No procrastinating!
  • Eat healthily and make sure you’re eating the right amount every day. Dont skip meals and don't binge on crisps and chocolates!
  • Get enough sleep every night, try to establish a regular sleeping pattern. Have a read of our blog about sleep here -
  • Stress and anxiety can cause you to isolate yourself, so ensure you’re still spending time with friends and family.
  • Exercise is a great way to blow off some steam and clear your head, as well as keep your fitness up. It also releases lots of serotonin and improves your mood.

If these things still don’t help, it may be a sign that professional help is needed. There are many free online services as well as face to face through the NHS, and many people find this very helpful. Theres a few links below for other services available;
